What is Crowd Science Demographics?

Crowd Science Demographics is a new analytics service that collects data on the demographics and attitudes of website visitors. By surveying a small number of randomly-selected visitors with standardized and topic-area-specific questionnaires, Crowd Science Demographics is able to build comprehensive profiles that give publishers a deep understanding of their audience and the proof they need to cut better advertising deals.

.

What can I use it for?

As far as understanding your audience goes, the more data you have, the better. Demographic and attitudinal data can provide insights that simply aren’t available from any other source. And when it comes time talk to advertisers, nothing is more valuable than reliable, third-party demographics.

.

What does it cost?

The basic service is free. We do, however, offer a set of paid plans that provide a number of extra features as well as increased limits on users and sites/subsites.

.

How do I install Crowd Science Demographics?

Simply create an account and place a small script tag into the pages of your website. That’s it. We’ll make sure the right visitors are engaged at the appropriate times.

.

Will Crowd Science Demographics affect any of my ads, widgets or other content that is running on my site?

No. We’ll play nicely alongside existing advertising and analytics products and we’re compatible with every publishing system we’ve come across. Furthermore, Crowd Science Demographics has what we call a zero-pixel-footprint, which means that we're only visible on the page on the small number of occasions that we're interacting with visitors, leaving you plenty of room for your content and widgets.

.

What type of questions will you ask in the survey?

Crowd Science has an experienced research team working and building context specific and research-tested questions. These are evolving and growing over time and include core demographic, intent, usage, brand, and satisfaction industry standard questions.

.

Can I see the survey questions beforehand?

Absolutely, but you have to sign up and add your site first. We build surveys dynamically based on the type and topic area of the website.

.

Can I add my own questions to the survey?

Yes, on our paid plans. Enter your questions using our question editor and we'll start inserting them into our surveys. The nice thing about this is that you get to filter and segment your custom question results via all of the standardized demographics that Crowd Science Demographics collects.

.

Can I preview the visitor experience before turning it on?

Definitely. Crowd Science Demographics provides the ability to test the experience on your website with a simple click. This test will not impact any other users and give you a accurate experience.

.

How many visitors will you intercept? Can I change this?

As few as possible. Using a sophisticated rate controller and well defined research guidelines, Crowd Science Demographics dynamically determines a low incidence to intercept visitors depending on traffic and other site parameters while it builds a statistically representative number of responses.

.

How much space or real estate does the invitation take up on my site's pages?

No space is taken up on your page except during survey invitation, which happens at a very low incidence rate. Even then, it temporarily pushes content out of the way or pops-up over content and disappears after a short period of time or if the visitor decides to take the survey.

.

Can I restrict recruitment to a certain portion of my site?

Yes. Data collection can be restricted to a particular zone using a regular expression that you include into your site's settings. This could isolate Crowd Science Demographics' gathering function to just you blog, for example, while leaving your photo gallery untouched.

.

How long does it take to collect data?

A number of factors may impact the length of time it takes to gather data, including site traffic, rates of invitation acceptance and profile completion. The general rule of thumb is that you need a minimum of 50 responses for a statistically-significant analysis. We will continue to profile your visitors so that you will get ever-better and up-to-date statistics. Note that meaningful data will not appear in the activity-tables or profile reports for at least 24 hours after activating the service.

.

Can I export site data and how?

Yes, you can export your data on all of our plans. No restrictions here.

.

What if I need help?

Crowd Science is here to help you get the most out of our data. If you have any questions, please contact us at help@crowdscience.com or visit our contact us or help page.

.

My site is under construction, can I temporarily disable the service?

Yes, survey-recruitment on each site can easily be disabled with the click of a button. When you are ready again, simply click start on your site page.
