Software Engineer
This position is based in Mountain View, California.
The area: Engineering
Crowd Science's engineering team designs, builds, and maintains the Crowd Science Demographics product and the technology platform that powers it. Our projects include working on information-analysis and control system algorithms, massive scalability and storage solutions, and rich, interactive user interfaces.
We're platform agnostic, but we have more Macs than PCs. We spend most of our time hacking Python and JavaScript using things like NumPy, Beautiful Soup, Prototype, and MySQL, but we're more than happy to drop into C++ or roll our own persistence mechanism when the situation warrants.
Crowd Science engineers take part in all aspects of software development from design, programming, and debugging to deployment and optimization.
The role: Software Engineer
We're looking for a software engineer who can help us design and build components of upcoming releases of our Crowd Science Demographics product and the toolset that supports it. This position will have a strong focus on user-facing features, so a nose for clever user interfaces and comfort with HTML, JavaScript and CSS is absolutely required.
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in computer science or mathematics, or equivalent experience.
- Experience designing/developing large-scale internet software systems.
- Experience working with Python and JavaScript. Bonus points for Django and/or Prototype.
- Knowledge of relational database concepts and patterns. Bonus points for MySQL.
- Deep familiarity and opinions on internet protocols and formats like HTTP, REST, JSON, and Atom.
Systems Administrator
This position is based in Mountain View, California.
The area: Technical Operations
Crowd Science's technical operations team designs, builds, and maintains the hardware, software and networking infrastructure that powers the Crowd Science Demographics service.
When it comes to our software/hardware stack, we have no particular religion. On the client-side, we’re platform agnostic, though PCs are rare. On the server-side, we’re a Unix shop. We’re currently living with Apache and MySQL on Solaris, but have plans to move to Linux.
Crowd Science systems administrators are expected to work across functional boundaries, contribute to process development, and be on call.
The role: Systems Administrator
We're looking for a good generalist systems administrator with skills spanning operating systems, databases, networking, and hardware who can help us scale up our hosting infrastructure. It’s still early days, so this position has a good build vs maintain mix.
This is a mid-level position, but if you’re less experienced and think you have the chops and can prove it, we’re all ears.
The load characteristics and performance requirements of the Crowd Science Demographics service are varied and challenging. This position will include large doses of profiling and tuning across all levels of the stack. Any experience administering services similar to hosted analytics, advertising networks, or widgets would be a huge plus.
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in computer science or mathematics, or equivalent experience.
- Experience designing and building infrastructure for large scale internet services.
- Experience maintaining and supporting a production environment.
- Deep knowledge and experience in Unix systems administration, preferably Linux and/or Solaris.
- Experience in database design, administration, and profiling/tuning, preferably MySQL.
- Proficiency in a scripting language, preferably Python.
- Experience with Nagios, Puppet, Memcached, and Subversion is a bonus.
